Cargo Without Manifest

Following departure from Nebuch at first light, Paradallax Initiative personnel began an estimated six-to-seven-day southbound surface transit toward the Star Shard. Chief Operations Officer Flint Duskbourne assumed direct control of the expedition hauler and its STEEL traction platform while the remainder of the team used the extended travel period for research, training, technical work and personnel integration.

Gabriel, recently attached to the expedition, was incorporated into normal operations without significant disruption. Quill Varon continued refining simultaneous low-output field manipulation techniques while periodically deploying the ABU reconnaissance platform ahead of the convoy. Fenn and Cass devoted transit hours to two secured puzzle-containment modules whose internal locking systems had previously resisted conventional access. Kant supplied intermittent technical corrections with his customary preference for being helpful only when a problem had become sufficiently interesting.

The convoy's first overnight halt produced a more complicated personnel issue. During an otherwise successful field-provisioning exercise, discussion concerning legal authority, individual ethics and the Initiative's previous acquisition practices became increasingly direct. Flint maintained that operational personnel remain subject to the laws of the territories through which the Initiative operates, regardless of disagreements with those laws. Fenn and Cass noted several historical inconsistencies in the organization's practical application of that principle.

Flint clarified that discretionary interpretation would cease where illegal activity threatened Initiative personnel or the Children. No formal disciplinary action resulted from the discussion, although the exchange established a substantially less theoretical context when Reggie later requested a private meeting with Gabriel.

Reggie disclosed that he had removed a juvenile owlbear from the custody of an outside handler without authorization. During the incident, the handler had assaulted him and subsequently died in the resulting struggle. Reggie had concealed both the animal and the circumstances of its acquisition, primarily out of fear regarding the response of senior personnel and, by his own admission, his father.

Gabriel advised disclosure rather than continued concealment and accompanied Reggie during his subsequent confession to Flint. Flint's response was severe but measured. He expressed both anger and disappointment, reiterated the legal and operational implications of the incident, and deferred a final decision until the actual condition of the animal could be established.

The following morning demonstrated why complete cargo declarations remain recommended.

Reggie destroyed the portable containment ring in which the organism had been stored. The first material recovered from the collapsed storage field was the partially consumed body of the deceased handler, subsequently identified as Boris. The juvenile owlbear emerged immediately afterward.

Onix implemented an expedited biological-material reclamation procedure on the remains before objections could develop into a formal disposal plan. The resulting reduction in evidence volume was operationally efficient and has been logged separately for compliance purposes.

The terrified animal immediately sought cover beneath the expedition hauler. Reggie attempted to fit it with a newly manufactured restraint collar, provoking a defensive bite and escalating the animal's distress. Cass attempted redirection with an improvised enrichment object while Flint temporarily immobilized the creature using a command-field interface. Reggie then attempted physical restraint.

Fenn intervened after establishing direct empathic communication with the organism and determined that its behavior was driven primarily by fear, hunger and unfamiliarity rather than aggression. She instructed personnel to remove the collar, reduce direct pressure and allow the juvenile to retreat.

The revised procedure produced significantly better results.

Over the following days Reggie supplied the animal with food without forcing further contact. Gabriel assisted with behavioral reinforcement, while Kant provided occasional technical guidance regarding approach and containment strategy. The owlbear gradually stopped displaying threat behavior, began voluntarily following the convoy and eventually rode atop the expedition hauler. Reggie designated the specimen Mouse.

No formal domestication classification has yet been approved.

Concurrent with the xenobiological incident, Fenn and Cass completed access procedures on both secured puzzle modules.

The first contained a rook-shaped object built around an active transformation lattice. Preliminary scans indicate that the object can alter or reconfigure material states through a mechanism not yet fully understood.

The second contained a bright-blue octagonal containment vessel surrounding an unstable high-density energetic core. Fenn's analysis suggests that the device can significantly amplify directed anomalous output—potentially approaching a twofold increase under ideal conditions—but repeated use may produce energetic backlash, structural failure or containment loss.

For once, personnel elected not to immediately test this hypothesis.

The device was secured for later study.

During the remaining transit, Quill briefed Gabriel on his specialization in adaptive field techniques and his practice of reproducing observed anomalous processes. He also reviewed an earlier expedition in which an apparently ordinary surface collapse deposited the team into the subterranean region known as the Underdark. Gabriel continued documenting Initiative procedures and confirmed his intention to remain with the expedition.

Route planning was subsequently reviewed. The team elected not to divert toward the Remnant. Priority remains the Star Shard, with the Dragon Scale Ruins designated as the next intended operation once the Star Shard objective permits reassignment.

At record close, the convoy remained southbound.
